The endless corridor

The group of survivors was being chased by grunts and screams through the dark corridors. Here and there one could see corpses of those who have suffered a different fate, but not worse by any chance. The fear that urged the survivors to continue was overwhelming. Those who have not had the courage, had joined the ranks of the mob that pursued them.
- “You hear that?” - Henrik said suddenly, speaking to the group.
In fact, something filled the air. A grotesque sound of someone chewing. The survivors looked around frightened.
- “Look …” - Velarya whispered, pointing.
And there it was. The body of another living, being devoured. The scene was horrifying. Henrik heard someone throwing up behind him. He felt the stomach twisting itself, but had to restrain himself, they were all looking at him. “Can we … No! We’ll go through another hall.” - He thought to himself.
- “We have to find another corridor before the horde catches us.”
The group nodded. And retreating, they continued. Not far from there, they were faced with a fork. From the left came the awful sound of the horde. The beasts advancing at an alarming rate, screaming in an unknown language, cheering for meat. In the hallway on the right crying could be heard. That was the way.
The screams were growing stronger indicating the approach of the horde, which prompted the group to accelerate the pace. After several minutes another dark hallway filled with corpses, heard again the crying. This time closer. It seemed like a child crying. “How can a child survive in this environment?”, He thought incredulously. Down the hall a door was discernible as a faint light passed beneath.
- “LIGHT” - a survivor shouted, running towards it.
- “Azona, no!”
Henrik reached out, trying to grab it, but it was too late. Azona ran non-stop towards the door, laughing. Her attention was focused on the door, which did not allowed her to see a figure moving in the shadows. But this has not escaped the eyes of Henrik.
- “Look out! At your side, in the shadows!”
But it was too late. Azona looked away from the door and her smile faded. The creature jumped on her and began to devour her. The sound of flesh being torn joined the cries of Azona. The group, paralyzed by fear, watched the scene. Then, a shot rang through the corridor. The survivors searched, confused, the source of the trigger until their eyes fell on the weapon in the hands of Derato.
- “I-It was -mmy last b-bullet … Is it dead?”
Their attention turned to the body of Azona, now unrecognizable, and the demon that hungover her dead. Blood gushed from multiple areas of the body, spreading slowly across the floor.
- “If you were not aware before, now you are sure where we are. We must hurry.”
Although reluctant, the survivors followed Henrik. They ran to the door and opened it. A white flash blinded them. When they grew used to the light, they saw that they were inside a small room lined with marble. The light source was unknown, but went to all corners.
-“Close the door.” - A sweet childish voice asked.
Velarya hastened to close it. In the center of the room stood a girl looking at them, with large empty black eyes. They stood there several minutes to assess each other, until Henrik took a step forward.
- “Who are you?” - It was a simple question. However, the room environment changed completely. The survivors felt intimidated by that look.
- “I am the ray of hope which forwards you against the enemy.”
Velarya looked away to watch the rest of the room. Behind the child was a table, and on it, weapons. That was the answer to the riddle.
- “Guns.” - She said, pointing to the table.
The group ignored the girl and ran to the table. There were big swords, small swords, pistols, automatic weapons. A bit of everything, enough to grant one for each survivor.
- “Is this the answer?” - Henrik asked as he turned to the girl. But she was gone. And with it, the light that filled that room. - “Quick!” - Yelled after hearing screams in the hallway.
Each one took what pleased him most. Henrik wielding a sword, so big and heavy that it was necessary the help of the left hand. Velarya grabbed two guns, ready to kill the most ferocious creature.
- “Barricade the door!”
Tables and chairs were stacked against the door, it was the only furniture in the room. They waited for the horde. You could hear a scratching at the door now. They were trying to enter.
- “It was a pleasure to live at your side. Let’s purge this horde of the world “- The door burst open, broken pieces of furniture thrown through the air. And with it, demons.
Henrik attacked their opponents by cutting them into pieces with precise movements.Velarya ran along the back wall, firing on the front of the horde. The bullet opened holes in the demons, exploding their heads. The screams mingled now with the sound of gunfire and blades. But it was an unequal fight. The survivors were in the minority and soon began to lose, as the demons advancing relentlessly. Blood flowed from both sides, painting the walls. One by one they fell, shattered by his opponents.
- “Henrik!”
He looked and saw a demon jump on Velarya, opening a hole in her belly. The horror came over him. Forgetting the battle he was fighting, he ran towards her, tearing the monster that tried to devour her.
- “Henrik …” - Whispered with a smile, looking into his eyes. - “We made it.”
- “Shh. Do not talk. Save your energy. “
They were looking at each other for what seemed like an eternity. All that Henrik wanted to say fled from his mind. The horror of Velarya’s death was too much.
- “Kiss me.” - She whispered.
Henrik took her belly and felt his body slip by. And kissed her. The world stood still during those seconds. They were alone in a deep goodbye. Velarya contorted in a spasm, and was silent forever. Tears streamed down the face of Henrik. In his eyes burned a fire of anger and hatred. Standing up he looked around him. Both friends andenemies lay dead on the floor, but the battle was far from over.
- “Velarya …” - Whispered. - “We made it.”
